When I was growing up, one of my beloved grandmothers wore Shalimar (and White Shoulders). My friends and I were recently talking about how certain perfumes brought back memories of the past and growing up, and how certain perfumes were like comfort foods for the soul. Shalimar has been around for a long time. If I recollect correctly, my greatgrandmother might have also used this but I'm not positive. There's comfort in the past, especially since my grandmother loved this perfume.
I was so very touched when a friend gave me this parfum... The very smell of it brought back memories of my grandmother. I remember she let me try it a few times, and I was once given an empty bottle to play with. It was her special scent.
I generally don't like vanilla in my fragrances, and this one does have vainilla in it. I really like this, however, but I wasn't sure if I like wearing it because it reminds me of my grandmother, or if I just like it because I like the fragrance. Regardless, when I do wear it, I find that people will ask what I'm wearing, and tell me it smells good. Compliments are something people always like to hear, and that made me feel good since I don't get that many compliments with my regular fragrance.
Since people are complimenting me on this (maybe four times a day when I wear it), it's something you might want to try if you want to be noticed and remembered. The other nice thing about it is that it lasts and doesn't need to be applied, and if you're light with your application, it won't be heavy, even though it has an oreintal flavor to it. I think most people will enjoy this parfum.

85 years old and still an exquisite treasure- 12.26.09
Quick Take: classic, potent, complex
I had to chuckle at reviewers here who said Shalimar smelled like an Obsession 'imposter' or that it was a typical 80s perfume. Shalimar was created in 1925, not the 1980s, when Obsession was created (1986).
I'm on my fourth bottle of Shalimar perfume (not the new weak, sour outliers). I keep experimenting with other scents, but i return to Shalimar. The original is a potent perfume, deep, rich, sensual, with a fragrance that develops and changes over the hours.
It's not a typical young woman's scent of today, which smells like candy, artificial fruit salad, chocolate, and too much vanilla. Shalimar is complex, for a woman, not a girl. It's probably not a good choice for the office. But for romantic or formal settings it's perfect.

Shalimar: A Perfume for Creating Memories- 06.10.09
Quick Take: complex rich deeply sensual an enduring classic
I have loved this rapturous, enveloping perfume for a lifetime. You can actually feel its warmth on your skin and breath as you inhale. I first used it when a teenager, sharing my mother's eau de cologne. I am now sixty and my mother has been gone for many years, but Shalimar's scent holds her memory for me. The perfume is highly recommended. Give your daughters (and sons) something wonderful to remember you by.

Quick Take: incomparable
One doesn't do this fragrance justice unless it's the pure perfume (rather than cologne versions). A well-to-do friend of my mother's gave me a beautiful little bottle of the perfume (perhaps 1/4 ounce?) for my 20th birthday--it came in a precious purple velvet box. That was almost 32 years ago.
I have never been satisfied with any other fragrance since. It is exquisite. I buy a bottle about every five years or so--it lasts a very long time, because just a wee drop is more than enough--but even so I go without for a few years until I find some reason for the extravagance.

Most feminine oriental- 03.11.09
Quick Take: feminine oriental, wonderfully mixed, no woods or musk
This is not a one-note perfume. It is a powerful mix of bergamot,iris, vanilla and amber. A little goes a long way. This is the most feminine oriental I have ever smelled. It does not even belong in a class with orientals such as Opium. Perfumes like Opium and Obsession are spicier and two steps more decadent.

Quick Take: strong, vanilla, ideal for a teen ager
A very heady and overwhelming scent. Main note I detected is vanilla. Wore this back in high school, even used to spray it on my sweaters and throw in the dryer for a few minutes. Similar to many other 1980's BIG scents.

This Stuff Does Something to Me......- 01.07.09
Quick Take: the living end
Wow. This is the real deal. This is what it's all about. This is a perfume that others are compared to. Text book oriental, it is a heady experience. Visions of silk and velvet and everything that brings to mind sand, tents and smoky encounters. Whew. Back on this planet, you can't go wrong with this.

I love everything about this parfum. It is a beautiful scent that lasts a long time, because you only need to dab very little on just once to enjoy it's lasting effects all day/night. It's a very sensual and warm scent that drives my husband wild. :)
